...more on Art Therapy
Therapy causes an opening and a deepening of ourselves. We get to know our story and all the characters that we are. As one becomes aware of oneself there is a sense of where we belong in the grand scheme of things. When one sees how one fits into the whole, one becomes aware of the responsibility we each have to take care of our own selves/lives, and how our acts and energy influence and contribute to the collective whole.
A wonderful way to make this journey is through Art Therapy. You can actually see it, create it in images, like collecting pictures of friends and places you’ve been. You can “face” fears and losses. You can honor dreams and things you don’t understand with images that have presented themselves to you. You can appreciate all aspects of yourself and the mysteries of life; record your story (so far).
It is much easier to accept what you can see in front of you in images. And acceptance brings balance and peace.
Images register in the same area of the brain that emotion registers. So an image can express emotion more therapeutically than words; saying “more than words can say”.
Image makes these things easier to see. You can set them outside yourself and take a good look at them, each, in turn.
There is no need to be an artist to engage in Art Therapy. It is not just for children. Art Therapy is a psychotherapy.
